Lancaster University: Sports and Exercise Science

Lancaster University

Hello from the Student Recruitment Team

Spotlight: Sports and Exercise Science (SaES)

The BSc in Sports and Exercise Science at Lancaster University brings together scientific and medical knowledge with professional sports and exercise science practice. We equip our students with the necessary knowledge and skills to thrive in a career in the field, from supporting elite performance to working in public health and beyond. At Lancaster, we’re proud to offer a truly student-focused learning environment, with a deliberately small class size and small-group teaching. We also get our students working with specialised, research-grade sports equipment from their first year.

PwC – Back to Schools Tour – Regional Sessions for Year 12 & 13 students

Following the success of our Back to Schools sessions in the Autumn, I wanted to invite you and your students to a regional session just for the North.

As a reminder, these sessions are for Year 12 and 13 students who are interested in a career at PwC with options including Accounting, Consulting, Technology and PwC Operate. Brighouse High School students who would like to join the 9th February event should email h.haigh@brighouse.calderdale.sch.uk to register their interest.

The sessions will last approximately 45 minutes each, including some time for questions. Students will hear from local staff who’ve joined us via our Flying Start degree programmes or our School & College Leaver programmes, helping them gain an insight into what we do and what opportunities are available to them at PwC.

Following your feedback we’ll be offering two live sessions on:

📆 Tuesday 9th February – 11-12pm (to tie in with National Apprenticeship Week)

📆 Thursday 25th February – 4.30-5.30pm

If you’d like to register your class to join either of these sessions, please fill in your details on  this Google Form.

We’ll then be able to send you full joining instructions and links a minimum of 48 hours prior to the event. Should schools still be working remotely when the events take place, we’ll send the joining instructions to you, with the ask that you then share this with your students (indicated on the google form) as we won’t have any way of contacting your students directly.

If you’re unable to make either of these sessions, we’ll also be offering 15 minute bite-sized, pre-recorded material designed for you to present to your students during form time, or whenever best suits you during your teaching day. We hope in this way we can be as flexible as possible to work around your busy schedules.

Sutton Trust – Free summer schools for your students – applications open midday today 11th January 2021

Despite being online, the other students and I were able to work extremely well together—taking part in games, quizzes and much more. I completed the programme feeling that I had been extremely productive.” – Gracie, Sutton-in-Ashfield, The University of Nottingham Summer School 2020

Applications for Sutton Trust Summer Schools will open at midday today! Applications close at midday on Tuesday, March 2nd

We are looking for high achieving students from less-advantaged backgrounds at state-funded schools to apply.

The Sutton Trust is a leading social mobility charity and our flagship UK Summer Schools will give your students an insight into university by spending a week with one of 13 leading UK universities and meeting like-minded students from across the UK.

Our new Apprenticeship Summer School will allow students to explore degree-level apprenticeships as an alternative to university by attending interactive skills sessions and networking with top employers.

While the upcoming months seem uncertain,  we are confident that with our new digital platform, Sutton Trust Online, we can continue to provide outstanding experiences. Whether the summer schools are delivered in-person or online, we will offer your students ongoing support and high-quality resources at a time they need it most.

Summer school students gain confidence and the skills to navigate the Higher Education system and make informed choices about their future. Over 6,000 young people benefitted from our Summer Schools last summer and we want your students to be next.

Who can apply?

Our Summer Schools are open to students who:

  • are currently studying in Year 12 (England and Wales), Year 13 (Northern Ireland) or S5 (Scotland)
  • have always attended a state-funded school or college

We are looking for high achieving (at least 5 A/6s at GCSE or 5 Bs at National 5) students from less-advantaged backgrounds. Students are more likely to gain a place if they meet additional social mobility criteria. Please see our teacher guide for more information.

How can you help?

Visit the Summer Schools teacher resources page where you can:

  • Learn more about how you can support students in their application
  • Find promotional materials including an email template  and Powerpoint Presentation you can use to tell eligible students about the programme
  • Sign up for informational webinars with the Sutton Trust and participating universities on the 26th and 28th of January or invite your students to sign up to a Q&A on the 21st of January

Applications close at midday on Tuesday, March 2nd, with teacher verification closing at midday on Friday, March 5th, so please do encourage your eligible students to apply soon.
