*** Our next teachers and advisors virtual event – Overcoming stereotypes in STEMM ***

Our next teachers and advisors virtual event is taking place on 26th November 16:00-17:30 and will be about overcoming stereotypes in STEMM.  We have a fantastic programme, including sessions on supporting men to enter the health profession and women into STEM, particularly engineering, which have been key areas for discussion across multiple sectors for some time.  The full programme is attached.  This is a great opportunity to come together and think about how we can support students to consider degrees and professions where there is currently an underrepresentation.  We hope you are able to join us for this exciting discussion.

Future Change Makers 19 November – 10 December (17:30 – 18:30)

Our Future Change Makers webinar series, designed and delivered by our Peace Studies and International Development Academics, is launching on Thursday 19 November. These weekly lectures will expose A-level and BTEC students to a wide range of subjects that are both topical and related to their syllabus – the Covid 19 pandemic, the global food crisis, far-right ideologies, nationalism, and the comparative study of revolutions. The programme offers an insight into university style teaching and will conclude on 10 December.

The programme is tailored to be accessible to a wide audience with no subject specific requirements. All participants who complete the full programme will receive 8 points towards their UCAS tariff for future study at the University of Bradford as an undergraduate Peace Studies student.

Future Psychologists 18 November – 9 December (16:30 – 17:30)

Our Future Psychologists Virtual programme has been designed, and will be delivered, by leading academics in our School of Social Sciences and launches on Wednesday 18th November. The Schools research expertise includes the application of psychology to understanding health and well-being; cognition and brain research including neuropsychology, perception, and developmental psychology; and the connections between identity, social constructivism and narrative.

Each session of the programme will investigate one of the four key strands of psychology – Cognitive; Developmental; Forensic; and Counselling.

The programme is tailored to be accessible to a wide audience with no subject specific requirements. All participants who complete the full programme will receive 8 points towards their UCAS tariff for future study at the University of Bradford as an undergraduate Psychology student.

Creating Future Lawyers 18 November – 16 December (13:30 – 14:30)

Our Creating Future Lawyers Virtual programme has been designed, and will be delivered, by leading academics in the School of Law and will begin on Wednesday November 18th. The 1st session will be an extended session of 1.5 hours (1:30 – 3pm). The programmes aim is to engage, inspire and inform students about Law, the developments and changes taking place in this fast-paced world, and give you an insight into further studies. 

Sessions will explore such subjects as: Why the Law needs you; A deep dive into Corona virus regulations; What is an Advocate?; Technology and the Law; and, Contracts, Carbolic Smokeballs and Covid.

The programme is tailored to be accessible to a wide audience with no subject specific requirements. The programme intends to use developments in the wake of the Corona Virus Pandemic to make the sessions familiar and accessible to students. All participants who complete the full programme will receive 8 points towards their UCAS tariff for future study at the University of Bradford as an undergraduate Law student.

Our academic webinars provide a fantastic opportunity to help you think about what you might want to study at university and potentially assist you when writing your personal statement for your UCAS application. Please visit our webinars webpage for a full list, covering a diverse range of topics. 

  • 18 November: Public Health Challenges (3:30-4:30 pm): Public Health is something that affects each of us. In this webinar, University academics and students discuss current challenges that we face and what it is really like to work in this area.  You can register HERE
  • 25 November: Do animals have theory of mind? (3:30-4:30 pm): This webinar discusses the theory of mind and whether animals have highly evolved social systems, their own languages, the ability to use abstract concepts and function at higher levels than originally thought. You can register HERE

19 November: Personal Statements (4-5 PM): In this session, we’ll discuss what you should include in your personal statement – giving you key tips to ensure you cover all your relevant work, voluntary and personal experience. What achievements they have attained for their study and career? Compare what you see online about Bradford Faculty of Management, Law & Social Sciences with what our students have personally experienced. 24 November: Enhancing Employability at university (12-1 PM) – In collaboration with Unitaster days: This session will focus on enhancing employability at University, looking at how higher education helps prepare you for the jobs of the future.

We’ll cover how to prepare and present yourself, and there’ll be a chance to hear from a current student about their own interview – gaining helpful advice from someone who’s just been through the process. University of Salford: Update 18 November 2020

I just wanted to share a few key highlights on offer from us here at The University of Salford over the coming month.

Guaranteed offer at Salford Business School 

For 2021 entry Salford Business School is guaranteeing an offer of a place to all those applying to an undergraduate programme within the School. We will also be offering additional study sessions in the run up to exams next year to help ensure that students are well prepared for assessments and exams 

The guaranteed offer is open to all students that apply to subjects within Salford Business School and applications can be made via UCAS until 15 January 2021. Full details of the Scheme 

Salford Academic Lecture  

On Tuesday 24 November our Criminology and Sociology teams are delivering a 30-minute talk on ‘The Social Consequences of Coronavirus’ This session provides an insight into a fascinating area within Sociology and Criminology and will enable your students to hear our academic staff delivering a lecture. 

In this session we explore current issues and what we can do to address them.

Our Applicant Support Sessions for November and December will be covering topics including personal statements and student finance. Career of the month – Building Services Engineer

Building Services Engineers are responsible for advising architects on the most cost-effective engineering services that a building requires, which must be environmentally friendly. These services include heating, lighting, ventilation, air-conditioning, electrical and water. Often a Building Services Engineer will specialise in one field, for example Mechanical Engineering which covers the air conditioning and heating etc.

Lancaster in the Media

Research has found that air pollution particles in young brains are linked to Alzheimer’s damage. Our Professor Barbara Maher, Lancaster Environment Centre, is part of the research team and has said “It is terrifying because, even in the infants, there is neuropathology in the brain stem”.

Scientists, engineers and technicians from the UK have embarked on a £26M project to help upgrade the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN, on the French/Swiss border near Geneva. Our Professor Graeme Burt of the Department of Engineering and the Cockcroft Institute is managing the technical co-ordination of the project.
